Woman charged in fatal central Alberta shooting

A central Alberta woman has been charged following a homicide in Maskwacis this week.

On March 19, 2026, at 6:51 a.m., Maskwacis RCMP were dispatched to a residence on the Ermineskin First Nation for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, RCMP located 29-year-old Shane Buffalo, deceased inside the residence from an apparent gunshot wound. 

Mounties say their investigation identified a possible suspect who had fled the scene with a firearm. According to police, resources were called in to assist in the search, including officers from RCMP Traffic Services, Wetaskiwin RCMP, Maskwacis RCMP, Central Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit, RCMP Police Dog Services and the Emergency Response Team.

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation and the suspect was located in the area and taken into custody.   

On March 20, 2026, Shaunelle Okeymow, 32, a resident of Louis Bull Tribe, was charged with the second-degree murder of Shane Buffalo. Mounties say she was remanded into custody and will appear in Alberta Court of Justice in Wetaskiwin on March 26, 2026.
