Preliminary hearing scheduled for Penhold man charged in fatal Blackfalds hit and run

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for a Penhold man charged in a fatal hit and run in Blackfalds last year. 

Alan Navarrete, 31, is scheduled to find out in Red Deer Court of Justice on June 11, 2026, if his case has enough evidence to go to trial. 

On June 16, 2025, at 11:39 p.m., Blackfalds RCMP received a report of a hit and run involving a pedestrian in a parking lot off Highway 2A in Blackfalds. 

Upon arrival, Mounties say emergency workers tended to the victim who was taken by ambulance to hospital where he died as a result of his injuries. 

The victim was identified as 39-year-old Preston Arndt.

Police say the suspect left the scene and was later arrested in Red Deer after another motor vehicle collision. 

The Alberta Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation and charged the suspect with manslaughter.
