RDP Athletics recap: Feb. 6-8

This past week, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens volleyball teams defeated the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. The Queens basketball team split its series with the Rattlers, while the RDP Kings basketball squad dropped its games to Medicine Hat College. The Lakeland College Rustlers got by the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens hockey team. The Kings hockey team defeated the Portage College Voyageurs on the road.

Basketball

Queens at Rattlers | Friday, February 6

The Queens Basketball team fell 73-53 to the Rattlers in Medicine Hat. Both Avery Stypula and Kaylee Foster had 11 points for the Polytechnic.

Queens at Rattlers | Saturday, February 7

The seventh-seed Red Deer Polytechnic Queens (5-12) picked up an 84-73 victory over the fifth-place Rattlers (7-10). Jorgia Hicks (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) had 10 points and 11 assists. Mia Cunningham (Bachelor of Business Administration) recorded 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Queens.

Kings at Rattlers | Friday, February 6

The RDP Kings Basketball team dropped a 98-70 decision to the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on the road. Calgary’s Noah Simon led the Kings with 25 points.

Kings at Rattlers | Saturday, February 7

The fifth-seed Rattlers (8-8) solidified a 111-70 decision over the seventh-place Kings (2-15) in an afternoon game.

Hamza Mahdi, a second-year guard from Surrey, had 22 points for RDP.

Hockey

Queens vs. Rustlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, February 6

The RDP Queens Hockey team was downed 3-1 by the Lakeland College Rustlers. Karli Kutschinski (Bachelor of Education) scored the Queens’ goal.

Queens at Rustlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, February 7

The second-place Red Deer Polytechnic Queens hockey team (16-8) fell short 4-2 against the top-seed Rustlers (21-2) on the road.

Hayley Kolosky and Camryn Ward had goals for the Polytechnic.

Kings at Voyageurs | Friday, February 6

The RDP Kings hockey team defeated the Portage College Voyageurs 2-1 in Lac La Biche. Cade Kennedy and Tanner Sklaruk scored for the Polytechnic. St. Albert’s Evan Fradette made 21 saves in the Kings’ net.

Kings at Voyageurs | Saturday, February 7

The top-seed Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team (19-3) sealed a 6-3 win over the sixth-place Voyageurs (6-14).

Nolan Doell scored twice for the Kings. Holden Knights, Carter Cormier, Jarod Newell and Sean Michalevich added singles. Ethan Farrow, an RDP Bachelor of Arts in Psychology student, stopped 27 shots.

Volleyball

Queens vs. Rattlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, February 6

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens volleyball team swept the Medicine Hat College Rattlers (25-12, 25-13 and 25-17).

Brooke Bergstrom led the Queens with 10 kills.

Queens vs. Rattlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, February 7

The first-place Queens volleyball team (14-2) earned a four-set decision over the seventh-seed Rattlers (2-15) at home (25-10, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-14). Setter Maria Brouwer recorded 39 assists, 10 digs and four kills for RDP.

Kings vs. Rattlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, February 6

The RDP Kings volleyball squad defeated the Medicine Hat College Rattlers in straight sets (25-10, 25-9 and 25-17). Dante Furlan accumulated six kills, four digs, three assists and one service ace for the Kings.

The first-place Kings (14-2) downed the fifth-seed Rattlers (5-12) in three sets (25-17, 25-22 and 25-20). Red Deer’s Brett Lower powered the Kings’ offence, totaling 15 kills and two blocks.
