Innisfail man convicted of assaulting a person and resisting arrest, sentenced to five months

An Innisfail man described by police as a high-risk offender and arrested on outstanding warrants last summer, has been sentenced to five months in jail and a firearms prohibition.

Dakota Caron, 22, was sentenced on Oct. 23, 2025, after pleading guilty to one count of assaulting a person with intent to resist/prevent arrest. Later, on Nov. 27, 2025, Caron pled guilty to one count of fail to attend and received a jail sentence of time served, while two other counts were withdrawn.

Caron was previously scheduled for trial in Red Deer Court of Justice on Feb. 4, 2026.

He was arrested most recently on Aug. 25, 2025, when Innisfail RCMP observed him walking in downtown Innisfail while wanted on outstanding warrants for assault, resist police officer, mischief, and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking.

Mounties alleged Caron had also failed to appear on drug trafficking charges on three separate occasions.

On Aug. 25, 2025, police alleged Caron attempted to hide behind a vehicle to avoid police.

After police told him he was under arrest for his outstanding warrants, the suspect attempted to flee the area on foot. However, RCMP say he was located trying to hide behind the Coffee Cottage restaurant.

An officer attempted to arrest the suspect, but police say he struck the officer numerous times and was able to flee on foot a second time towards the Innisfail Legion with officers in pursuit. RCMP say the suspect entered the Legion where he was immediately confronted by Legion staff and subsequently arrested by police.

Caron was then given an additional charge of assault on a police officer.

A judicial interim release hearing was held, and Caron was remanded into custody on his outstanding warrants and his new charge.
