Changes likely coming to school & playground zone hours in Lacombe

Changes are likely coming to the times school and playground zones are in effect within the city of Lacombe.

Recently, the municipality received a request from Terrace Ridge School to review the school zone hours for C&E Trail along the west side of the school.

The school day there starts at 7:50, but current school zone hours don’t take effect until 8 a.m. It also ends at 2:50 p.m., with the afternoon school zone hours starting at 3.

This week, city council unanimously passed first and second readings of a change that would see school zone hours across the city be moved a half hour back. Therefore, the morning run would start at 7:30 instead of 8, and the afternoon run would start at 2:30 instead of 3.

There are also midday school zone hours of 12 to 2, which don’t conflict with Terrace Ridge’s hours, but that timeslot will also be moved back to become 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The three-phase school hours are in accordance with Alberta Transportation’s default school zone times, though other municipalities such as Red Deer have hours that run straight through.

In Lacombe, playground zone hours run from 8 a.m. until one hour after sunset, and this is also slated to move back to a 7:30 a.m. start. This falls under the municipal Traffic Bylaw.

The cost to change the 145 signs around the city is approximately $5,000 to $7,000, which fits into the existing budget for signage.

The matter returns to city council on Feb. 9.

Lacombe Police Service didn’t have a breakdown of school and playground-specific tickets related to speeding and stop signs.
