RDP futsal teams ready for another kick at the can

Jan 28, 2026 | 11:04 AM

Kings and Queens futsal teams at Red Deer Polytechnic are preparing for their new season, or another kick at the can, if you will.

On the men’s side, the Kings could be formidable, and showed flashes of that in an 8-0 pre-season win over Olds College on Jan 17.

“The Kings are quick on their feet and they dig for balls. They are physical and don’t give up,” Head Coach Mahziar Peyrow explains. “They play with a lot of togetherness and there’s a good vibe.”

The team will have 13 players from the 2025 King’s soccer squad.

They open the season Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 facing Concordia, NAIT, and Northwestern all in Grande Prairie.

They’ll close out the regular season with three matches vs. the same three teams on Feb. 21 and 22 at the Edmonton Soccer Centre.

Keyano, Lakeland, Portage, and King’s University make up the Northeast Division, while Medicine Hat, Ambrose, SAIT, Olds, and Lethbridge comprise the South Division. Red Deer, Concordia and NAIT make up the Northwest.

The top two teams from each division, plus two wildcard teams, will advance to the ACAC Men’s Futsal Championship, slated for March 20-22 at Medicine Hat College.

As for the women, the Queens are bringing in 15 members from the women’s soccer team that won national bronze last year.

Head Coach Mahziar Peyrow says the group is sharp.

“The Queens played the next day after nationals and they’ve been going ever since, so they’re in decent shape,” he explains. “Last year, we were figuring things out. This year, we made some adjustments and want to earn an ACAC medal.”

2025 was the return to futsal for the Queens after 12 years and they missed the playoffs.

Those teams meet again in Edmonton Feb. 21 and 22.
