Stettler town council amends bylaw to allow for potential AI data centre developments

Stettler town council approved amendments to the land use bylaw, allowing data centre developments within the community’s industrial areas.

The move was made during their regular council meeting on Tuesday, which the town says positions them as a community ready for future growth and innovation.

The amendments to the land use bylaw, the town explained, align with the provincial government’s Artificial Intelligence Data Centres Strategy.

The changes were made to prepare for potential opportunities for data centre development.

Council members, the town added, are optimistic about the potential benefits a data centre development could bring to the community, which include community growth, economic diversity, increased municipal tax revenue, and employment opportunities.

“Council is committed to exploring a variety of economic development avenues that support long-term sustainability and growth for Stettler,” said Gord Lawlor, Mayor of the Town of Stettler, in a media release. “This amendment sends a clear message that Stettler is prepared to work alongside the province and industry as new economic opportunities emerge and keeps our community well positioned to attract investments that benefit residents and strengthen our local economy.”

The Town of Stettler will continue to work collaboratively with provincial partners, industry stakeholders, and the development community as it explores opportunities that align with Council’s strategic priorities and the community’s long-term vision.
