RDP Athletics recap: Jan. 16-18

This past week, the Red Deer Polytechnic volleyball teams defeated the Briercrest College Clippers. The Queens hockey team downed the SAIT Trojans twice, and the Kings hockey team split its series with the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings. Both basketball squads dropped their games to the Clippers. The RDP Kings and Queens curling teams picked up wins at Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Tournament #2 and advanced to the playoffs.

Volleyball

Queens vs. Clippers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 16

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens volleyball team swept the Briercrest College Clippers (25-16, 25-17 and 25-13).

Red Deer’s Nadia McKeage accumulated seven kills for RDP.

Queens vs. Clippers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 17

The first-place Queens (10-2) dropped the second-seed Clippers (10-3) in three sets (25-17, 25-11 and 25- 14).

Maddy DeZutter, an RDP Bachelor of Education student, totalled six digs and one assist.

Kings vs. Clippers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 16

The Kings volleyball squad defeated the Briercrest College Clippers (25-14, 25-19 and 25-16).

Red Deer’s Colby Nemeth led the Kings with 18 kills (0.727).

Kings vs. Clippers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 17

The first-place RDP Kings (10-2) earned a victory over the second-seed Clippers (10-3) in straight sets (25- 17, 25-19 and 25-18).

Evan Mah, an RDP setter, stacked up 25 assists, four digs and two kills.

Hockey

Queens vs. Trojans | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 16

The RDP Queens hockey team defeated the SAIT Trojans 5-1 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

Gabriella Meier scored twice for the Queens. Rylee Mepham, Kaedence Mollin and Sarah Raymond added singles. Juliette Gagne-Delaunay (Bachelor of Kinesiology) made 18 saves in the Queens’ net.

Queens at Trojans | Saturday, January 17

The second-seed Red Deer Polytechnic Queens hockey team (14-4) blanked the fifth-place SAIT Trojans (4-13) by a 4-0 margin in Calgary.

Jailyn Bablitz, Camryn Ward, Mia McGregor and Tasha Barsby contributed goals for RDP. Tora Ward (Bachelor of Education) stopped 28 shots, earning the shutout.

Kings at U of A Augustana | Friday, January 16

The RDP Kings hockey team fell 6-2 to the University of Alberta Augustana Vikings in Camrose.

Ryland McNinch and Nathan DeGraves scored for the Polytechnic.

Kings vs. Vikings | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 17

The first-place Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team (14-2) solidified a 4-1 victory over the third-seed U of A Augustana Vikings (6-10) at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

Nathan DeGraves, Tyson Janzen, Holden Knights and Cade Kennedy scored for the RDP Kings. Evan Fradette (Open Studies) made 20 saves in the Kings’ net.

Curling

Kings & Queens | ACAC Tournament #2 | January 16-18

Both the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens curling teams have qualified for the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Curling Championships.

At ACAC Tournament #2, the Kings went 3-2, finishing second in the men’s division with a combined record of 7-3 (from both tournaments) and qualifying for the postseason.

The RDP Queens had a 2-4 record, ranking fourth overall in the women’s division with a combined record of 6-6 and advancing to the championships held January 30 to February 1 at Lac La Biche Curling Club.

Basketball

Queens at Briercrest College | Friday, January 16

The RDP Queens basketball team dropped an 80-50 decision to the Briercrest College Clippers in Saskatchewan.

Both Jorgia Hicks and Avery Stypula scored 14 points for the Queens.

Queens at Briercrest College | Saturday, January 17

The top-seed Clippers (9-4) earned an 83-74 decision over the eighth-place Queens (3-11).

The RDP Queens recorded 28 rebounds.

Kings at Briercrest College | Friday, January 16

The Briercrest College Clippers defeated the RDP Kings 104-79. The Kings were successful on 70.6 per cent of their free throws.

Kings at Briercrest College | Saturday, January 17

The RDP Kings were downed 100-76 by the Clippers. Tong Akol, a second-year guard from Calgary, led the Polytechnic with 20 points.
