Teen sentenced in Red Deer firearm incident

Jan 20, 2026 | 3:17 PM

A Red Deer teen charged in a firearms incident in the city’s south end last year has been sentenced to one month in jail.

Maverick McGillivary, 19, of Red Deer, was scheduled for trial in Red Deer Court of Justice from Jan. 16-19, 2026. However, he was sentenced on Jan. 16, 2026, to 30 days in jail, after being convicted on counts of possess weapon dangerous to the public, and fail to comply with release order.

Eight other counts against him were withdrawn.

McGillivary was given 30 days credit though, leaving him with no time left to serve. His sentence also includes probation, and a firearms prohibition.

It was approximately 11:49 a.m., on April 14, 2025, when Red Deer RCMP received a report of an individual with a firearm located in a field in the Lancaster neighbourhood.

Officers responded and arrested an 18-year-old male, along with two youths, one male and one female. Police say the trio was taken into custody without incident.

RCMP say a firearm was recovered and confirmed to be a replica firearm.

McGillivary was originally charged with three counts of failure to comply, three counts of failure to comply with a release order condition, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, uttering threats, and using an imitation firearm in the commission of an offence.

He was initially taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody.
