Red Deer County announced they’ve installed two new electric vehicle chargers at the Red Deer County Centre.

They also applied for grant funding from Alberta Municipalities through the Electric Vehicle Charging Program (EVCP) to support the project.

The County says Alberta Municipalities has funded over 170 new charging stations across the province.

“The Electric Vehicle Charging Program is funded in part by Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure program and Alberta Municipalities,” said Andrew Treu, Environment Services Manager, Red Deer County, in a media release. “Providing EV charging at County Centre is a service for our visiting business partners; it’s another amenity that supports sustainability and innovation.”

The County says in 2023, two Mitsubishi Outlander plug‑in hybrid electric vehicles were purchased with financial assistance provided by the province through programs administered by the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre (MCCAC).

They added in 2022, the county received funding from MCCAC for their Kia Niro EV and two charging stations.

According to Alberta Municipalities, the Electric Vehicle Charging Program was introduced this year and will provide $1.7 million in funding to successful applicants for the purchase and installation of EV charging stations.
