City of Lacombe shares 2025 summer operations highlights

The City of Lacombe says it had a busy and productive summer in 2025, with city crews completing important work across roads and Infrastructure, Parks & Facilities, Water & Wastewater, Solid Waste and Enforcement Services.

City officials note, council recently received the 2025 Summer Operations Annual Review, which outlines work completed during the summer months. Despite challenges such as aging infrastructure, heavy use of parks and trails, and a significant increase in utility locate requests related to TELUS fiber installation, officials say city services continued to be delivered at strong service levels.

Summer 2025 Highlights

• Crack sealing was completed on approximately 83 per cent of the City’s road network

• 1.8 kilometers of trails were resurfaced

• Major upgrades were completed at Ball Diamond #6 and Ball Diamond #7

• 685,740 kg of organic material was collected through the organics program and diverted for composting

• The City launched online reservations at Michener Campground, resulting in 1,083 bookings and a 25 per cent increase in revenue compared to 2024

• City staff completed 1,839 utility locates, more than triple the number completed in 2024

• Strong enforcement support during street sweeping and community cleanup campaigns

Additional Work Completed

City officials say crews also completed asphalt patching, pothole repairs, sidewalk and curb repairs, line painting, gravel alley maintenance, and stormwater drainage channel maintenance.

The city says Parks staff maintained ball diamonds, soccer pitches, playgrounds, trails, cemeteries, and green spaces, while also completing playground inspections, tree planting and replacements, urban forest maintenance, gardening and beautification work throughout the community.

Capital Projects

The city says several major capital works projects were completed in 2025, including improvements to roads, sidewalks, trails, water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure, as well as pedestrian safety upgrades such as rectangular rapid flashing beacons. Officials say these projects were delivered within approved budgets and support long-term infrastructure sustainability.

Looking Ahead to 2026

In 2026, the city says operations will focus on:

• Expanding road maintenance programs and planning for equipment replacement to reduce downtime and improve reliability.

• Capital playground replacements, soccer field turf rehabilitation, and ongoing hazard tree management across parks and natural areas.

• Continuing investing in the city’s urban forest, supported by the dedicated $24,000 allocation in the 2026 budget for tree planting, replacements, and long-term canopy health.

• Resuming deferred utility maintenance programs such as UDF hydrant flushing and valve exercising, while locate volumes related to development and fiber installation will taper off in 2026 due to the completion of this program.

• Solid Waste public education using the solid waste streams and when to drive to Prentiss.

• Enhancing enforcement support for sweeping, snow removal, and operations-led activities.

• Prioritizing capital works based on updated asset condition assessments and lifecycle planning.

• Reviewing staffing, seasonal support, and service level capacity to maintain community expectations as workloads continue to grow.
