five-game point streak

Rebels Jaxon Fuder has found his stride

It’s been quite a journey for Red Deer Rebels forward Jaxon Fuder on the road to his early but promising hockey career so far.

Over a year ago, the product from Cold Lake, Alta. began the 2024-25 campaign on the Powell River Kings of the British Columbia Hockey League before signing with the Rebels in October 2024.

Now, the 19-year-old has solidified himself as one of the team’s top performers in the Western Hockey League, all while also under contract with the National Hockey League’s Dallas Stars.

“If you would of told me a year ago today that I’d be signed with an NHL team, I wouldn’t have believed you, so I’ve come a long way in the last year, but I couldn’t have done it without the coaching staff and everyone that’s supporting me,” he told media members on Tuesday.

“I’m very grateful to everyone who’s helped me along the way. I couldn’t have done it without my coaches and teammates supporting me. It’s pretty cool just to see the progress I’ve made in the last couple of years.”

With a team leading 23 points in 20 games, Fuder has nearly surpassed his point total from last season, where he notched 26 points in 46 games.

A big part of that is a five-game point streak he’s currently on, which is the longest streak he’s had in the WHL. He also scored his first career WHL hat trick against the Saskatoon Blades a little over a week ago in front of family and friends.

He explained that he struggled offensively early in the year, but after developing some chemistry with linemates Samuel Drancak and Ty Coupland, all of that has changed.

“Obviously, Sammy is on an eight-game goal streak, so that’s pretty sweet to be a part of, and then Coup’s and I are producing as well. That helps the team at the end of the day,” he said. “I couldn’t have done it without the boys. Everyone’s chipping in from the first line to the fourth. Wins are the biggest thing for us right now.”

Fuder signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Stars on Sept. 23.

The Stars extended the offer after Fuder attended their development camp earlier in the summer and later their main training camp while on a tryout agreement.

Fuder made the most of his opportunity and proved himself despite not getting selected in the 2025 NHL Draft.

“[The Stars] are really happy with my game right now. The thing with them is to be the best player you can be for your team, so that’s what they’re looking for, and I feel like I’ve been doing that pretty consistently,” he added.

“Talking to teams last year and them being really happy with my game, [I was] kind of expecting to be drafted. I was ranked and not getting drafted kind of just lit a fire, and I just wanted to prove everyone wrong.”

Even though the Rebels are currently just outside the playoff picture with an 8-11-1-2 record, over the past few weeks, they’ve shown signs of improvement. In their last five games, they have a 3-1-1 record, which is good enough for ninth in the Eastern Conference.

This Friday, they’ll host the first-place Edmonton Oil Kings at the Centrium at 7 p.m. before heading to Calgary on Sunday for a 2 p.m. showdown at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
