Red Deer Polytechnic recently celebrated the accomplishments of a group of apprentices who saw success at skills competitions over the past year.

They recognized the talented group at the institutions’ 2025 Building on Excellence event on Wednesday.

This year, the RDP apprentices won two goal, three silver, and and four bronze at the Skills Canada Alberta competition held in Edmonton.

In addition, RDP welding student Lucas Stang won gold at the Skills Canada national competition in Regina, Sask.

Stang’s achievement marked the sixth national gold medal in seven years for RDP’s apprentices. Next up, Stang will compete at the World Skills Competition in Shanghai, China, in September 2026.

“We were honoured to come together as a polytechnic community, alongside industry partners, alumni and supporters, to celebrate the remarkable achievements of RDP apprentices at skills competitions,” said David Pye, Dean of the School of Trades and Technology at Red Deer Polytechnic. “Their continued success is a testament to the skill and commitment of our instructors, as well as the high-calibre, industry-aligned education and training offered at RDP, strengthened through collaboration with employers.”

In the Alberta competition, Adam Moore and Stang both earned gold, followed by silver medal victories from Carson Donovan, Tyler Hagstrom, and Riley Jacobs. Meantime, Miles Alger, Tyson Bucklaschuk, Lucas Drage, and Simon Pell earned bronze.

Since 2003, RDP’s apprentices have earned a total of 94 medals between the Skills Canada Alberta and Skills Canada National competitions.

“This gathering was both a celebration of the achievements of Red Deer Polytechnic apprentices and a moment to express our gratitude to employees and industry collaborators for their vital role in shaping our learners,” says Lindsay Engel, Vice President of Academic and Student Experience, Red Deer Polytechnic. “These partnerships are key to preparing skilled trades professionals, meeting workforce needs and driving Alberta’s productivity.”

The next Skills Canada Alberta competition will be held at the Edmonton EXPO Centre on May 6 and 7, 2026.
