Rebels offence comes alive in 7-4 win over Wheat Kings

The Red Deer Rebels were firing on all cylinders, and it showed.

On Tuesday, six different goal scorers found the back of the net for the Rebels in a 7-4 victory in Brandon, Man., against the Wheat Kings.

Rookie forward Landon MacSwain led the way with four points (1G, 3A), and netminder Peyton Shore made 37 saves.

The Wheat Kings got on the scoreboard first at the midway point of the opening period, scored by Joby Baumuller, who knocked in the loose puck during a scramble in front of the net.

Rebels defenceman Matus Lisy found the equalizer with a minute and a half left in the first. He beat the goaltender with a wrist shot from the slot off the setup pass from Nolan Schmidt.

In the second period, Red Deer took their first lead of the game off the stick of forward Beckett Hamilton. He forced a turnover in the Wheat Kings’ zone and scored after the defender misplayed the puck with 11 minutes remaining.

Later in the frame, the Wheat Kings took a 3-2 lead after Baumuller scored two straight goals within four minutes of each other to complete a hat trick.

However, the Rebels answered once again with a goal from forward Samuel Drancak, who has now scored in each of his last six games.

He scored the power-play marker with 6.9 seconds left in the second period while crashing the net for the rebound.

Red Deer broke the tie in the third period with 17:32 left, after defenceman Keith McInnis sniped a shot into the top left corner of the net off a feed from MacSwain as he entered the offensive zone.

MacSwain added an insurance goal for his fourth point of the evening. With under nine minutes left in the game, he fired a shot into the open net after Wheat Kings goalie Jayden Kraus misplayed the puck when he came out of the net.

The Wheat Kings refused to go away and added one more with just minutes remaining from Brady Turko to come within one of tying it.

The Rebels, however, notched a pair of empty netters from Talon Brigley and Beckett Hamilton to seal the deal.

Next up, the Rebels will return home to face the Saskatoon Blades on Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Centrium at 6 p.m.
