Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools Division’s board of trustees were officially sworn in on Tuesday.

On Oct. 28, at the organizational meeting, the trustees also elected a board chair and vice-chair for the first year of their term. As a result, newly elected trustee Chris Andrew was elected as board chair and Cynthia Leyson, who is a returning trustee, was elected as vice-chair.

The remaining elected trustees on the board include Cathy Bouchard (Hwy. 11 Ward), Murray Hollman (Red Deer Ward), Brenda MacDonald (Red Deer Ward), Marty Reed (Red Deer Ward), and Ed Wiper (QEII Ward).

Andrew has been an educator for 35 years and believes in the essential role Catholic education plays in shaping both minds and hearts. He also served time as parish council chair and his current ministry as an eucharistic minister at St. Mary’s Parish.

“Our board is dedicated to building on the excellence of Catholic education in Red Deer. We will continue to advocate tirelessly for a system that shapes both minds and hearts, ensuring our schools remain a beacon of faith, learning, and student success for years to come,” said Chris Andrew, Board Chair.

Meanwhile, Leyson, who’s originally from Manila, Philippines, graduated from Centro Escolar University with a degree in Mass Communication. She is an extremely active member of St. Mary’s Parish, and for nearly two decades, she has served as the coordinator for Junior Altar Servers. Her extensive involvement in the parish also includes serving as an adult server, eucharistic minister, a member of the Catholic Women’s League (CWL), Union of Catholic Apostolate (UAC) and participation in the Arts and Environment ministry.

“It’s an exciting time to welcome this new board. We share a deep commitment to our students, parents, and staff. I look forward to collaborating closely with every trustee to ensure our school system is centred on faith and continues to achieve exceptional results,” said Rhonda Nixon, Superintendent of Schools.

During the meeting, trustees were also appointed to Committees of the Board, and school liaisons were chosen for each of the 21 schools.
