Football Alberta Weekly Top-10 Rankings

Sep 22, 2025 | 9:35 AM

Here are the Weekly Top-10 Rankings for all five levels of high school football in Alberta for the 2025 season.

These rankings will come out every Sunday (except for Labor Day kickoff) from now up until November 2. At that time those will be the last rankings and teams will take this rank into Provincials.

The 12-a-side teams are slotted into their levels based on their estimated school size by School Sport Alberta while the 9 and 6-a-side are one level only. Some re-sorting of 12-a-side levels will take place after the final official population numbers are recorded at the end of September.

Note: games vs. U.S. opponents, scrimmages, or tournaments are not taken into consideration for ranking or listed in the overall record of the schools.

UPCOMING GAME(S) OF THE WEEK:

4A #1 Catholic Central Cougars vs. #5 Chinook Coyotes Friday, September 26th , 7:30 p.m., U. of Lethbridge Stadium (Lethbridge)

4A is tough to rank this year, which is a good problem to have. Catholic Central is now the third team in three weeks to take the #1 spot as the previous two holders of that spot have lost badly to Raymond. The Cougars date with the Comets comes on October 9 but they are undefeated for now, so we’ll go with them.

This week the 4A Battle of Lethbridge is a big thing in 2025. With the long tradition of the Catholic Central Cougars in full swing this year going undefeated so far, they run into a team from across town with no so long a tradition but undefeated as well in the Chinook Coyotes.

Only one team will come out of Zone 1 into Provincials this year and the 4A level is packed with good teams. This game will go a long way to seeing who might be standing at the end of the season.

3A #1 Holy Rosary Raiders at #5 Olds Spartans Thursday, September 25th , 4:00 p.m., Great Chief Park (Red Deer)

The Olds Spartans have been down this road before. Always a solid 3A team they have scheduled an aggressive non-conference schedule this year against ranked 3A opponents.

There first two non-conference forays where excellent football games but saw the Spartans come up short to both Sylvan Lake and Willow Creek. Olds is hoping third time is the charm this week, but have an even tougher challenge in the #1 ranked Holy Rosary Raiders from Lloydminster.

9-a-side #2 Ponoka Broncs at #5 Wainwright Commandos Saturday, September 27th , 7:00 p.m., Commando Field (Wainwright)

Two teams that are flourishing at the 9-a-side level meet in Wainwright this week. Both Ponoka and Wainwright have a decent history in 12-a-side with the Commando’s even winning a Tier III Provincial Championship in 1994 but it was becoming quite the struggle pre-COVID for both programs.

Post COVID both teams have made the move to 9-a-side where the smaller rosters fit their smaller school populations and things have taken off. In 2024, the Commandos entered Provincials with the #1 ranking only to be knocked off in the semi-finals by #3 Ponoka at home.

The Broncs then went on to lose in overtime to Peace River in the Alberta Bowl. A revenge game? Maybe. But more importantly a chance to sharpen the axe going forward into the 2025 Provincials.

6-a-side #1 J.C. Charyk Hawks at #2 Breton Cougars Friday, September 26 th , 4:30 p.m., Breton High School (Breton)

Breton is a quiet, small town nestled in the forests west of Pigeon Lake. It is also the modern birthplace of 6-a-side high school football in Alberta.

It’s true the Cougars were in the Game of Week for 6-a-side last week, and we usually don’t do repeats, but you can’t ignore a battle between the #1 and #2 ranked teams at any level of play. The #1 ranked Hawks may not have been the birthplace of 6-a-side in Alberta but they are now arguably the epicenter of it, with their first-rate facilities and recent history of championships and hosting major national and international 6-a-side events.

Again, Breton is a small town just like any other along highway 20, but it will be the place to be on Friday for the best of fast break football.
