Aug 13, 2025 | 9:49 AM

A local youth has been given a suspended sentence and 18 months of probation following an assault last year.

Austin Dampier, 19, was sentenced in Red Deer Court of Justice on Aug. 12, 2025, after being convicted on one count of assault-chokes-suffocates. Two other charges of assault with a weapon, and threats causing death/bodily harm, were withdrawn. Dampier was also given a firearm prohibition.

It was on May 9, 2024, when Red Deer RCMP responded to a 911 call reporting a robbery with a knife.

At approximately 11:25 a.m., Red Deer RCMP received the call which stated a male suspect had a knife and had threatened another person in the area of Riverside Drive. RCMP responded immediately, however, the suspect had fled the scene and ran into a wooded area.

Police Officers from General Duty, Traffic Section, Downtown Patrol Unit (DPU), and Police Dog Services (PDS) searched the area for the suspect. Red Deer RCMP were also able to utilize Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), commonly known as a drone, to assist in locating the suspect.

Austin Dampier was originally charged with the following offences:

  • Assault with a weapon
  • Assault while choking
  • Uttering threats
