Plane crash southeast of Red Deer under investigation

Aug 6, 2025 | 5:26 PM

One person was seriously injured after a small plane crashed on a private airstrip in central Alberta on Aug. 5.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) says the two-seater, a Vans RV9A aircraft, was flying Tuesday from Wetaskiwin Regional Airport to a private non-registered airstrip in Linden, a town about 100 kilometres southeast of Red Deer in Kneehill County.

The agency says the plane was approaching the rural airstrip in Linden, near Range Road 254, when its landing gear hit a wired fence at the approach end, and flipped over.

The TSB was notified around 6 p.m. Tuesday of the incident, which occurred about 90 minutes prior.

RCMP, meantime, say two 82-year-old men were on board.

Both have since been released from hospital, but initially one was airlifted to hospital in serious condition, while the other was taken by ground ambulance with minor injuries.

The safety board said Wednesday it did not initially send investigators to the site, but are now gathering information and assessing.

RCMP continue to assist the TSB with the investigation, where necessary.
