Alberta Health Services has announced a newly recruited cardiologist now practising in Red Deer.

Officials say Dr. Ahmad Shoaib has made the move to the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre where he provides general cardiology and cardiac imaging. AHS says he also offers the same services at the Healthy Heart Institute in Red Deer.

He also specializes in complex coronary procedures using advanced techniques including intravascular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography and adult echocardiography.

“I’m excited to be part of this vibrant community and to play a role in advancing cardiac care in central Alberta,” Dr. Shoaib said, adding he was drawn to Red Deer by its strong sense of community, growing healthcare infrastructure, and the opportunity to contribute to the region’s expanding cardiac services. “The upcoming cardiac catheterization lab project is a significant step forward, and I look forward to contributing to its success.”

AHS says his clinical practice covers a wide range of conditions, including ischemic heart disease, hypertension, arrhythmias, heart failure and valvular heart disease.

“We are excited to welcome this exceptional physician to our local care team,” said Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services and MLA for Red Deer-North, in a media release. “His extensive expertise and dedication to advancing cardiac care will greatly benefit our community.”

AHS says he began his journey in medical education in Pakistan before he completed specialized training in cardiology and general internal medicine in the United Kingdom. The health agency says Dr. Shoaib has a doctorate in heart failure from the University of Hull and finished fellowships in interventional cardiology in Canada and the U.K.

Officials say he’s also published more than 58 peer-reviewed articles, and serves as an honourary associate professor at Aston University in Birmingham, U.K., where he mentors students and junior doctors.

Before coming to Canada, AHS says Dr. Shoaib served as a consultant cardiologist at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust in the U.K.

“We’re thrilled to welcome this esteemed physician,” adds Jason Stephan, MLA for Red Deer-South. “His cardiac expertise and unwavering commitment to patient care will greatly strengthen health services across Red Deer and the surrounding area.”
