A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Tofield man accused of fleeing the scene of a traffic stop this week.

The Lacombe Police Service says Aaron Olson, 42, was pulled over on Monday, July 28 at approximately 12:44 a.m. while driving a white Dodge Ram truck heading eastbound on Highway 12 at 58 Street in Lacombe.

Police allege the driver was driving erratically and observed the vehicle moving at inconsistent speeds. Police allege they also saw signs of impairment in the driver and an open alcoholic beverage within reach.

While attempting to search the vehicle, authorities allege the man became non-compliant and physically combative, which led to him resisting arrest. He also allegedly assaulted two police officers and attempted to flee in his vehicle.

LPS says officers used a conducted energy weapon and pepper spray to try to get the driver to comply but the suspect re-entered his vehicle and sped away.

With assistance from the Red Deer, Blackfalds, and Ponoka RCMP detachments, the Lacombe Police Service attempted to locate the driver but only found his abandoned vehicle later in a rural area near Ponoka. Police say they searched the vehicle and found a quantity of suspected methamphetamine.

Police also used aerial drone surveillance and police dog services in hopes of finding the man but were unsuccessful.

As a result, the suspect has been charged with two counts of assaulting a peace officer, two counts of resist arrest, one count of flight from a peace officer, one count of possession of a controlled substance, and one count of mischief under $5,000.

The suspect is described as six feet tall and 269 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. If members of the public see Aaron Olson, police say do not approach him but call the Lacombe Police Service at 403-782-3279.
