Empire Building demolition rescheduled for later this week

The City of Red Deer says demolition of the Empire Building (4909 48 Street) downtown has been rescheduled, but it won’t be long.

Originally scheduled to take place June 27-30, the demolition was postponed because of unexpected circumstances, and it will now happen July 9-13.

The delay is related to crews discovering one of the building’s walls was attached to an adjacent building.

The city says remediation work is set for July 7 and 8 before.

The public can expect some sidewalk and parking closures as crews work. More specifically, on-street parking and sidewalks along 4907 and 4909 48 Street will be closed from July 9-14.

In addition, the south alleyway behind the building will be closed to through traffic from July 9-21.

“We remind the public to stay clear of the site,” the city explained in a media release. “The work zone will be fenced off and secured, and after-hours security will be in place. We understand construction can be disruptive and appreciate your patience as we complete this important work.”

The building has sat derelict since a fire ravaged the structure in October 2021. The city was allowed to move forward with the demolition after a court order was issued in November 2024.
