Man convicted in central Alberta homicide sentenced to eight years

Jun 12, 2025 | 10:29 AM

A Wetaskiwin man accused of murder in a central Alberta homicide nearly two years ago has been sentenced to eight years in jail.

Matyrus Minde, 27, was sentenced in Wetaskiwin Court of King’s Bench on June 9, 2025, after being convicted on one count of manslaughter. He was given enhanced credit, however, of 455 days of pre-trial custody, leaving him with 2,465 days or over six and a half years left to serve. Minde was also given a firearm prohibition during his sentencing.

Minde was originally charged with one count of second-degree murder.

It was on Sept. 29, 2023, when Maskwacis RCMP responded to an aggravated assault on Ermineskin First Nation.

According to Mounties, the victim, a 52-year-old male resident of Maskwacis, was transported to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Ther RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation, in partnership with Maskwacis RCMP General Investigation Section, Maskwacis RCMP, Red Deer Forensic Identification Unit, and the Edmonton Medical Examiner’s office.

Minde was charged following that investigation.
