Eighth annual Touch-A-Truck event set for May 10 at Westerner Park

The Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre’s eighth annual Touch-A-Truck event will go ahead this Saturday.

The event, which is set for May 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Westerner Park, is a chance for anyone to come out and see numerous different types of trucks, tractors, and vehicles. These include semi-trucks, tractors, buses, fire trucks, police vehicles, and more.

Denise Rambow, programs and services coordinator at the Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre, said it’s also an opportunity to interact with the people who work with those vehicles as well.

“Almost any type of vehicle you can think of will be at the event,” she said. “We only run three fundraisers a year and this is our major fundraiser.”

Admission into the Touch-A-Truck event is $30 per family which is up to six people and $15 for single admission.

Additionally, advanced family admission is $25 which are available through eventbrite or through the Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre website.

The money raised from ticket sales will go back to the Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre to go towards their various programs they run throughout the year.

Through this they’re able to offer presentations in the community for crime and fraud prevention. They also have summer staff they hire to help clean graffiti in the community and provide crime prevention information.

“It helps support the centre so we’re able to meet our initiatives,” she said.

The idea for the event came about seven years ago when the centre explored different options for a new fundraiser. They wanted to put something together that would be fun for the whole family. They came across the idea online, as touch-a-truck events are common in the U.S.

It was originally held at the Crossroads Church in Red Deer but after quite a bit of growth, they’ve moved it to Westerner Park the last three years.

“We get so much support from the different businesses that bring vehicles as well. It’s gone from 50 to 60 vehicles to nearly 100 vehicles every year,” Rambow said.

There will also be plenty of other activities at the event including a bouncy castle, a smash-a-car opportunity, free draws, a vendor market, and more.
