Resolved: Hazardous material leak prompts road closure in Edgar Industrial area

A hazardous materials incident that took place last night has been resolved by Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES).

Just after 7:30 p.m. on May 7, RDES responded to a rail car leaking petrochemicals in the Edgar Industrial Area, east of 7791 Edgar Industrial Way.

As a precaution, the Edgar Industrial baseball fields were evacuated and Edgar Industrial Drive was temporarily closed in both directions.

Evacuations are standard procedure for events of this nature, commented Evan Stewart, RDES assistant deputy chief, adding that the risk to the public was found to be minimal.

RDES worked with hazmat crews from CP Rail and NOVA Chemicals to resolve the situation, including isolating the leak and monitoring air quality.
