Fire advisory in effect for Lacombe County

Effective April 25, a fire advisory is in place for all of Lacombe County due to warm temperatures, windy conditions and a lack of anticipated precipitation.

For now, the county says it will continue to issue fire permits for minor burns, however, permits for larger burns will not be approved until conditions improve.

The following activities are permitted during a fire advisory:

Small, permitted burns (no approvals for large burns)
Safe wood campfires*
Bylaw-compliant backyard fire pits
Portable propane fire pits
Gas or propane stoves and barbecues
Catalytic or infrared-style heaters

*Safe wood campfires include those in campgrounds, private lands and backyards. The fire must be contained within a metal, brick or rock fire ring and comply with the county’s Fire Bylaw.

Requirements for safe wood campfires include:

Placement on a rock, gravel, sand, or other non-combustible surface extending at least one metre around the fire;
A responsible person must attend the fire at all times and ensure it is extinguished before leaving;
Adequate water must be available on site to fully extinguish the fire.

Other safety reminders:

Off-highway vehicles can ignite wildfires. Frequently check for debris on hot spots and ensure mufflers and spark arrestors are functioning properly.
Never leave a campfire unattended. Soak it, stir it, and soak it again until it is cool to the touch.

The fire advisory may be upgraded to a fire restriction or ban at any time and will remain in place until conditions improve.
