Red Deer County launches fire cadet program

Apr 20, 2025 | 12:00 PM

A new fire cadet program is being launched by Red Deer County.

The program will offer a comprehensive and structured pathway for young individuals aspiring to careers in fire and emergency services.

It will involve both classroom theory and hands-on training, and the chance to graduate with the NFPA 1001 Firefighter Level 1 certification.

“As someone who started my career as a work experience student, I have a special place in my heart for these programs. I am truly excited to see this come to fruition,” said Drayton Bussiere, Fire Chief, Red Deer County.

“If you know a student who might be interested learning the values of commitment, pride, and teamwork, the Fire Cadet Program is designed to not only train the next generation of emergency responders but also instill essential qualities such as leadership, community involvement, mentorship and cooperation.”

Training will primarily be conducted at Red Deer County Fire Station 6, located in the Clearview Industrial area at 249 Clearview Drive, with additional practical sessions held at stations closest to each participant’s residence.

All textbooks, reading materials, and uniforms will be provided by Red Deer County. Cadets will only need to supply their own polishable black steel-toed boots.
