Rebels hunt for the playoffs continues with win over Broncos

Mar 12, 2025 | 9:56 PM

The Red Deer Rebels kept their playoff chances alive with a big 3-2 win over the Swift Current Broncos on Wednesday.

Trailing the Broncos for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, the Rebels captured the road victory to stay in the mix.

The Rebels scored first when forward Jaxon Fuder ripped a shot through traffic from the top of the left circle that beat goaltender Reid Dyck with 4:54 left in the opening period.

Fuder’s 10th tally of the season was made possible off the feed from defenceman Doogan Pederson.

Red Deer took a 2-0 lead midway through the second period on a one-timer opportunity from Pederson at the right circle assisted by Jhett Larson.

With one second to go on the powerplay, Brett Calhoon placed a shot in the top corner from the slot to take a three-goal lead with less than eight minutes to go in the middle frame.

However, the Broncos finally got on the board late in the period. With 4:18 remaining, Otto Hanson pulled his team within two following a pass from Parker Rondeau.

To begin the third period, the Broncos made the Rebels pay scoring on a five-on-three powerplay opportunity to make it a one-goal game. Clarke Caswell scored for the Broncos just over three minutes into the final period off a pass from former Rebels defenceman Hunter Mayo.

The Broncos pushed for the equalizer late in the period but rookie goaltender Peyton Shore and the Rebels shut the door. He finished the game with 20 saves on 22 shots.

Next up, the Rebels will look to make it three wins in a row on Friday when they host the Prince Albert Raiders at the Westerner Park Centrium at 7 p.m.
