ASIRT investigation leads to assault charge following Samson Cree First Nation incident
An Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) investigation has found an officer’s use of force against a person in custody while on the Samson Cree First Nation to be unjustified, leading to a charge for the officer.
ASIRT reports that evidence gathered during the investigation provided reasonable grounds to believe an offence was committed at the time of incident.
As is procedure, the case was then forwarded to the Alberta Crown Prosection Service (ACPS), who determined the evidence available did meet their standard for prosecution.
ASIRT Executive Director Michael Ewenson, King’s Counsel, determined that the involved officer should be charged.
