Michener North Lands purchase delayed

The City of Red Deer’s procurement of Michener North Lands from the provincial government has been delayed by environmental testing.

In August 2024, the office of the infrastructure minister said the two parties were in the midst of finalizing the purchase and sale agreement, with the sale expected to occur by the end of the year.

An update provided by the ministry on Feb. 7, 2025, says, “The City of Red Deer requested further environmental testing, which is currently underway. Infrastructure will discuss next steps with the City of Red Deer once testing is complete later this year.”

The City of Red Deer provided the following explanation for the request:

“The reason we’re doing that is it’s just a normal process in due diligence when you purchase a piece of land, especially a piece of land with history,” said Russ Watts, speaking on behalf of the land and economic development manager. “We’ve asked for more information.”
