Flying Fathers Hockey Club to visit RDCRS next week

Feb 7, 2025 | 12:19 PM

The Flying Fathers Hockey Club will be touring Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools next week.

On Tuesday, Feb. 11, the Flying Fathers, a group of Catholic priests who have been playing hockey and sharing their faith for over 50 years, will share personal stories and discuss their vocation during the visits.

They’ll also play a game of floor hockey with the students and later faceoff against RDCRS staff and students in an exhibition hockey game.

“We are thrilled to host the Flying Fathers in our schools,” said RDCRS Board Chair Murray Hollman in a media release. “Their visit provides a wonderful opportunity for our students to connect with their faith in a fun and engaging way. We believe this experience will be memorable for our entire school community.”

On top of playing hockey, the Flying Fathers spread a message of faith, sportsmanship, and community. On the ice, they’re known for their entertaining antics and inspiring stories. They’re also featured in a Grade 6 textbook called Growing in Faith, Growing in Christ.

The exhibition hockey game is set for Wednesday, Feb. 12, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Servus Arena in Red Deer. Students will be there to cheer on the team but because of a lack of space, the game will not be open to the public.

“We’re excited to have the Flying Fathers back in Alberta after a nearly 20 year absence,” said Fr. Kris Schmidt, a local member of the team. “The Flying Fathers are remembered fondly by older generations from previous visits and now we’re excited to bring the unique combination of faith, fun, and hockey to a new generation.”
