Feb 2, 2025 | 11:33 AM

The Red Deer Rebels have another win under their belt after taking a 3-0 lead against the Moose Jaw Warriors at the Moose Jaw Events Centre on Feb. 1.

A slow first period saw one power play opportunity go to Red Deer after Warrior Max Finley took a call for cross-checking, but they were unable to score.

The frame finished 0-0 with Red Deer leading shots on goal 8-3.

Period two was shaping up to be a slow one as well until Luke Moroz took a high sticking minor about halfway through, sending the Rebels into a fruitless power play.

Momentum picked up at 17 mins when Red Deer’s Samuel Drancak and Moose Jaw’s Max Finley started swapping blows on the ice, each of them earning major fighting penalties. Warrior Brady Ness also joined the fray and got called on a major kneeing penalty and game misconduct.

The 0-0 tie continued into the third period, although the Rebels outshot the Warriors 17-6.

In frame three, Red Deer finally found the mark at 2:41, with Noah Milford securing his first goal of the season and bringing the team to a 1-0 lead. He was assisted by Beckett Hamilton.

Matthew Gard then got sent to the box at 6:39 for high sticking but Moose Jaw was unable to score.

The Rebels followed up their first goal with one for insurance at 9:16, shot by Jhett Larson, his seventh of the season, with assistance from Matthew Gard.

The Warriors saw a chance to narrow Red Deer’s 2-0 lead thanks to a tripping minor by Rebel Brett Calhoon at 10:03 but failed to take advantage of the power play.

Moose Jaw started feeling the pressure in the second half of the period, pulling their goalie for the last three minutes of play.

Derek Thurston took advantage of the empty net to sink his seventh puck of the season at 18:34, bumping the Rebels to 3-0.

In addition to a 3-0 lead, the Rebels outshot the Warriors 34-16 overall.

The three stars of the game went to Red Deer’s Noah Milford and Warrior Matthew Hutchison.

The Rebels return to their home ice at the Peavey Mart Centrium on Feb. 7, where they’ll take on Moose Jaw again. They face off at 7 p.m., and you can catch all the action live on 106.7 Rewind Radio.
