This week in RDP Athletics: Jan. 23-25

This week, the Red Deer Polytechnic Indoor Track team will begin the ACAC season. Both RDP Basketball teams will host the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. The RDP Queens Hockey team will face the Lakeland College Rustlers. The Kings Hockey team will play the Concordia University Thunder. The RDP Volleyball squads will challenge the Rattlers in Medicine Hat. The Kings and Queens Futsal teams will compete against the Broncos on the road.

Here is a summary of the upcoming competition:

Indoor Track

Running Room Grand Prix #1 | Kinsmen Sports Centre | Saturday, January 25

The Red Deer Polytechnic Indoor Track team is looking to continue its legacy of excellence during the 2024/2025 ACAC season.

During the past several seasons, the RDP Queens have been dominant on the track and the Kings have won team and individual medals.

“The Queens have earned two consecutive gold medals at the ACAC Championships and we plan to defend this title for a third year,” says Michael Schnare, RDP Indoor Track/Cross Country Running Head Coach. “This will be achieved by our student-athletes accomplishing their individual goals which contribute points to our team score.”

The 19 student-athletes will concentrate on three key areas throughout the season to reach their larger goal.

“We will be focusing on improving our speed, strength and race strategy,” notes Jenna, RDP Indoor Track/Cross Country Running Head Coach, who enters her first ACAC Indoor Track season with Michael as head coaches. “As new head coaches to this program, we strive to make Red Deer Polytechnic not only a competitor in Cross Country Running but also with Indoor Track. We want to build one of the strongest programs in the province.”

Basketball

RDP Queens vs Rattlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 24 | 6 p.m.

The fourth place Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team (8-5) will play the Medicine Hat College Rattlers (6-7), who sit fifth in the ACAC Women’s Basketball South Division.

The Queens have been successful on 39.2 per cent of their shots from the field.

Queens vs Rattlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 25 | 1 p.m.

The RDP Queens will tip-off against the Rattlers in the Fas Gas – On The Run Gymnasium.

RDP Kings vs Medicine Hat | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 24 | 8 p.m.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Basketball team (5-8) will face the fourth place Medicine Hat College Rattlers (7-6) at home. The Kings sit in sixth spot.

The RDP Kings have connected on 31.7 per cent of their three-point attempts.

Kings vs Rattlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 25 | 3 p.m.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings will face the Rattlers to wrap up the weekend series.

Hockey

Queens vs Rustlers | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, January 24 | 5 p.m.

The third place RDP Queens Hockey team (10-5) will host the Lakeland College Rustlers (15-2), who rank first in ACAC Women’s Hockey.

Izzy Palumbo and Tora Ward, Queens goaltenders, have combined for a 0.905 save percentage.

Queens at Rustlers | Saturday, January 25 | 5 p.m.

The Queens will challenge the Rustlers on the road.

RDP Kings at Concordia University | Friday, January 24 | 7 p.m.

In a rematch between last season’s finalists, the third seed Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team (9W5L-2 OTL) will face-off against the fifth place Concordia University Thunder (6W-9L-1 OTL) in Edmonton.

Nolan Doell (Bachelor of Education Middle Years) leads the Kings with 10 goals this season.

Kings vs Thunder | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, January 25 | 7 p.m.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team will host the Concordia University Thunder.

Futsal

Queens at Olds College Broncos | Thursday, January 23 | 6:30 p.m.

The RDP Queens Futsal team (1-0) will challenge the Broncos (0-1) in Olds. This will be the Queens’ final game before the first South Regional in Lethbridge from February 1-2, 2025.

RDP Kings at Olds College | Thursday, January 23 | 8 p.m.

The Kings (0-1) will play the Olds College Broncos (1-0). After this matchup, the RDP Kings will participate in the South Regional hosted by Lethbridge Polytechnic.

Volleyball

RDP Queens at Medicine Hat College | Friday, January 24 | 6 p.m.

The first place Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Volleyball team (9-2) will challenge the Rattlers (2-9) in Medicine Hat. The Rattlers rank fifth in the ACAC Women’s Volleyball South Division.

Francesa Sandini, Queens libero, has the fourth highest digs per set average (3.35) in the league.

Queens at Medicine Hat College | Saturday, January 25 | 1 p.m.

The RDP Queens will battle against the Rattlers in an afternoon contest.

RDP Kings at Medicine Hat College | Friday, January 24 | 8 p.m.

The second place Kings Volleyball team (10-1) will compete against the Rattlers (4-7), who sit seventh in the ACAC Men’s Volleyball South Division.

Red Deer’s Colby Nemeth (Bachelor of Commerce) ranks first in total kills (169) and kills per set (4.57) in the league.

Kings at Medicine Hat College | Saturday, January 25 | 3 p.m.

The RDP Kings will play the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.
