A pair of Red Deer athletes have been named as two of three Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) weekly award winners.

Easton Daneault won the AJHL Rookie of the Week award and Cooper Moore was named the AJHL Player of the Week. Casey Black of the Canmore Eagles was also awarded the AJHL Defensive Player of the Week.

Moore, who’s fresh off an AJHL Player of the Month honour, led the league with three goals and four assists for seven points in two games with the Lloydminster Bobcats from Dec. 9 to 15.

The 18-year-old rookie recorded his first AJHL hat trick against the Calgary Canucks on Dec. 13, followed by a career-high four-point game the next day with four assists against the Olds Grizzlys.

He’s currently third in the AJHL scoring race with 32 points in 25 games.

Meanwhile, Daneault also had himself a productive week scoring one goal and four assists for five points in two road wins.

The 16-year-old forward posted his first multi-point game on Dec. 13, with a goal and three assists in a win over the Fort McMurray Oil Barons. He followed that up with an assist in a victory over the Bonnyville Pontiacs the next day.

He’s now tied for third in rookie scoring and fifth overall with 29 points in 30 games.

Earlier this year, Daneault was selected 146th overall in round seven by the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft and in October of this year, he committed to play NCAA Division I hockey at Merrimack College.
