Scoring woes

Rebels blanked by Oil Kings on the road

Nov 24, 2024 | 7:54 PM

Less than 24 hours after the Red Deer Rebels earned a convincing win at home, they were shut out 5-0 by the Edmonton Oil Kings.

In front of thousands at Rogers Place, Oil Kings Gracyn Sawchyn and Gavin Hodnett scored three points each in the victory.

Meanwhile, Edmonton goaltender Alex Worthington made 26 saves and recorded his first shutout of the season. Rebels goaltender Chase Wutzke made 29 saves on 34 shots.

The Rebels, who rank dead last in the league in goals for, continued to struggle in the offensive end. They were outshot 34-27 and were held scoreless on three powerplay attempts. The Oil Kings scored two powerplay goals on four opportunities.

The Oil Kings got on the board first with a goal from Sawchyn with 5:09 left in the opening frame.

Sawchyn was drafted by the Rebels first overall in the inaugural U.S. Priority Draft in 2020 but his rights were later traded to the Seattle Thunderbirds.

His 11th goal of the season created a lengthy delay because of the Oil Kings annual Teddy Bear Toss game.

In the second period, the Oil Kings took a commanding 3-0 lead with a pair of goals within four minutes of one another.

Forward Joe Iginla found the back of the net just 6:30 into the frame followed by a powerplay tally from Adam Jecho at the midway point of the period.

In the third period, Edmonton continued their dominance.

Lukas Sawchyn, Gracyn’s brother, added to the Oil Kings’ lead with over five minutes to play and with just under two minutes to go, forward Gavin Hodnett made it 5-0 to seal the deal.

Next up, the Rebels will return to the Centrium for a pair of homes games next weekend.

They’ll face the Prince George Cougars on Friday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. followed by a matchup with the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday, Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.
