Red Deer and area ready to remember

This Remembrance Day, Red Deer and surrounding areas have plenty of gatherings and ceremonies for you to honour and reflect on the many sacrifices made by Canada’s soldiers.

The Red Deer Legion invites the community to join in their powerful reminder of the true cost of war beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Servus Arena (4725 43 Street). Whether you’re a veteran, a family member, or simply wish to pay your respects, the Legion welcomes you to stand with it in remembrance and reflection.

The Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery (MAG) will also be holding Remembrance Day activities. From noon to 4:30 p.m., it will feature collection artifacts related to military history, offer interpretive tours, and facilitate a family-friendly art project.

The MAG will also host a live string quartet performance by the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra. All MAG activities and the performance are free to attend.

Sylvan Lake’s Legion will also be hosting a ceremony at Fox Run School (2 Falcon Ridge Drive) starting at 10:30 a.m. There will be a lunch at the Legion afterwards.

In Blackfalds, the Blackfalds Ministerial Association will be hosting its annual service at the Abbey Centre Field House (4500 Womacks Road). Pre-seating starts at 10:25 a.m. and and the service runs from 10:45 a.m. to noon, and parking is limited.

Most of the service will be indoors, but there will be a brief outdoor ceremony at the Cenotaph, so dress warm. For more information, call 403-885-9828.

Innisfail’s Legion will hold a ceremony at the Cenotaph (4904 50 Street) beginning at 10:30 a.m. The event will be livestreamed on Facebook for those who want to join but can’t stand outside for the duration of the ceremony. Afterward, everyone is welcome back to the Club Room at the Legion, and members are asked to bring their membership cards.

In Lacombe, the Lacombe Legion will serve a by-donation breakfast from 8-10:30 a.m. in the Byron Greff Memorial Hall (5138 49 Street). This will be followed by a service at the Lacombe Memorial Centre (5214 50 Avenue). The Legion lounge will remain open once the ceremony is done.

The Ponoka Legion’s ceremony will be held in the Stagecoach Hall at the Stampede Grounds (5616 39 Avenue) starting at 11 a.m. Doors will open at 10:15 a.m., and anyone is welcome to attend. There will be a light lunch served afterward.
