RDP Athletics weekend recap

This past week, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Cross Country Running team earned gold at the ACAC Cross Country Running Championships. The RDP Kings Cross Country Running squad ranked fourth. Both Soccer teams placed fourth at the ACAC Soccer Championships in Grande Prairie.

The RDP Basketball and Volleyball squads began the 2024/2025 season on a winning note.

The Kings Hockey team split their weekend series with NAIT. The RDP Queens Hockey team dropped both road games in Edmonton. The Red Deer Polytechnic Rodeo team competed in Fort Macleod (with the official results to be posted online).

Here is a summary of the recent results:

ACAC Cross Country Running Championships | St. Mary’s University | Saturday, October 26

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens had another dominant performance, earning gold at the ACAC Cross Country Running Championships in Calgary. The RDP Kings (69 points) ranked fourth, narrowly missing a bronze by five points.

The RDP Queens (40 points) were led by Justine Larson, a 2024 ACAC Women’s Cross Country Running All-Conference team member. Strathmore’s Larson (26:02) placed seventh over 6 km. Georgia Sawchuk (26:31) finished ninth and Melissa Ray (26:33) was 10th.

The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks Women’s team (51 points) earned silver. The NAIT Ooks (64) solidified bronze.

Grimshaw’s Jordan Coen (28:56) led the Kings, completing the 8 km race in ninth spot. First year Japhet Kipkosgei (29:09), a University Arts Diploma student from Kenya, finished 12th.

The SAIT Trojans Men’s team (10 points) wrapped up gold. The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks (47 points) sealed silver and NAIT (64) picked up bronze.

The RDP Queens have qualified for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross Country Running National Championships hosted by the St. Clair College Saints in Windsor, Ontario on Saturday, November 9.

ACAC Women’s Soccer Championship | Northwestern Polytechnic | October 25-27

On Friday, October 25, the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Soccer team defeated the host Northwestern Polytechnic Wolves 3-1, advancing to the semi-finals. Paige Kalbfleisch, Payton Erick and McKenna Leslie scored for the Queens.

In Saturday’s semi-final, the Queens were blanked 1-0 by the Concordia University Thunder. Then, the RDP Queens dropped a 4-1 decision to the Keyano College Huskies in Sunday’s bronze medal game, finishing fourth in the ACAC. The Thunder defeated the SAIT Trojans in the gold medal match.

ACAC Men’s Soccer Championship | Northwestern Polytechnic | October 25-27

The RDP Kings were edged 2-1 by the Keyano College Huskies in the semi-finals on Saturday. Red Deer’s Grant Johnson scored the Kings’ lone goal.

In the bronze medal game on Sunday, the Kings were downed 2-1 by the SAIT Trojans, placing fourth in ACAC Men’s Soccer. Johnson tallied for RDP. The NAIT Ooks defeated the Huskies for gold.

Volleyball

Queens vs Ambrose University Lions | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, October 25

The RDP Queens Volleyball team kicked off the new season with a four set victory over the Ambrose University Lions (25-15, 23-25, 25-17 and 25-13). Sarah Mistol (Bachelor of Education – Secondary) powered the Queens’ offence with 13 kills (0.400).

The Queens (2-0) earned a four set win over the Lions (0-2) in Calgary (25-18, 25-15, 23-25 and 25-17). Red Deer’s Lauren Junck accumulated 18 kills (0.469), two digs and two blocks for the Queens. RDP setter Maria Brouwer (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) stacked up 40 assists, three kills and two digs.

Kings vs Ambrose University Lions | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Friday, October 25

The Kings Volleyball team swept the Lions in three sets at home (25-22, 25-15 and 25-14). Both Dillon Gauci (Bachelor of Kinesiology) and Colby Nemeth (Bachelor of Commerce) contributed 10 kills.

RDP Kings at Ambrose University | Saturday, October 26

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (2-0) defeated the Lions (0-2) in four sets (25-13, 25-22, 16-25 and 25-20). Red Deer’s Brett Lower (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) accumulated 12 kills. Setter Brett Theise had 38 assists.

Basketball

Queens at Ambrose University Lions | Friday, October 25

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens Basketball team defeated the Ambrose University Lions 77-51 in Calgary. Brandi Thibeaux (Bachelor of Business Administration) led the Polytechnic with 20 points.

Queens vs Lions | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, October 26

The RDP Queens (2-0) earned a 79-39 decision over the Lions (0-2) at home. Rachel Harvey, a six-foot-one forward from Brooks, contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Queens.

Kings at Ambrose University Lions | Friday, October 25

The Kings Basketball team picked up a 118-89 victory over the Lions on the road. Cole Wicker (Bachelor of Education) led the way offensively for the Kings, contributing 27 points.

RDP Kings vs Lions | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre | Saturday, October 26

In their home opener, the RDP Kings used a quick start to down the Lions 86-66. Jose Mauro recorded 24 points and 14 rebounds for RDP.

Queens at NAIT Ooks | Friday, October 25

The RDP Queens Hockey team dropped a 5-3 decision to the NAIT Ooks in Edmonton. Kyla Hansel (Pharmacy Technician Diploma), Chloe Belter (Bachelor of Education) and Arilyn Toews (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) scored for the Queens.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Hockey team was downed 3-1 by the NAIT Ooks at home. Deegan Mofford, a six-foot-three forward from Rocky Mountain House, scored the Kings’ lone goal on the power play.

The RDP Kings (1W-2L-1 OTL) defeated the Ooks (1W-2L-1 OTL) by a 6-5 margin in overtime. Kasey Hiemstra, Jarod Newell, Easton Haygarth, Nathan DeGraves and Dawson Leroux contributed goals for the Polytechnic during regulation time. Holden Knights scored the game winner.
