WHL Cup action continues in Red Deer

The second day of the Western Hockey League (WHL) Cup will officially be underway this evening in Red Deer.

At 4:15 p.m. at the Peavey Mart Centrium, British Columbia will take on Saskatchewan followed by a matchup with between Alberta and Manitoba at 7 p.m.

On Friday, action will continue at 10:30 a.m. between Saskatchewan and Manitoba and at 1:15 p.m. between Alberta and British Columbia.

Playoff matchups on Saturday and Sunday have yet to be determined based on the remaining round-robin games.

However, the semifinals will be played on Saturday with the second seed taking on the third at 1:15 p.m. and the first seed facing the fourth at 4 p.m.

The bronze medal game matchup will be played at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday followed by the gold medal game at 1 p.m.

In the opening games on Wednesday, British Columbia took down Manitoba 4-3 and Saskatchewan toppled Alberta 5-2.

Manitoba’s Asher Gringas, a first round pick of the Kamloops Blazers in 2024, leads the tournament with three points so far.

Red Deer’s Brock England, who’s suiting up for Alberta, is also in the mix sitting in fourth in overall scoring with two points. The 15-year-old went 11th overall in the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft to the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Also suiting up for Alberta are goaltender Drake Mooney from Blackfalds and forward Crew Martinson from Olds. Martinson scored in Alberta’s first game.

Meanwhile, Red Deer Rebels prospects defenceman Graeme Pickering is playing for Manitoba and forward Cash Arcand-Vandale for Saskatchewan. Arcand-Vandale registered an assist in their first win on Wednesday.
