INCREASED SERVICE FEES PREFERRED TO TAXES

Blackfalds residents share thoughts on 2025 budget

Oct 10, 2024 | 4:12 PM

As part of its process for Budget 2025, the Town of Blackfalds has received for information the results of a citizen survey on service satisfaction and budget priorities.

In the October 8 regular meeting, council discussed the results of the survey, which asked citizens to evaluate their satisfaction with town services.

There were 352 residents who completed the entire survey and left comments, and the age group of 31-45 was the largest group of participants.

Overall, the most popular response for service satisfaction was “meets expectations,” with most services receiving a rating of “above expectations.”

“I’m happy to know that people are satisfied and that in some cases, we’re exceeding expectations,” commented Mayor Jamie Hoover.

The highest count of “exceeds expectations” went to parks, playgrounds, and green spaces.

Respondents were also asked to give a rating on the overall value received for their tax dollars, and 55.7 per cent responded that it “meets expectations,” with the second-most common response being “below expectations” at 22.7 per cent.

Finally, participants were asked about approaches to balancing the budget. The most popular responses were:

  • 36.5 per cent of respondents would prefer the Town introduce new user fees for some services that are currently free (ex. Transfer station access, RV dump station access, etc.)
  • 20.7 per cent of the respondents would prefer the Town to postpone infrastructure projects (ex. New amenities or major repairs)
  • 19.3 per cent of the respondents would prefer to reduce the levels of Town services (ex. Hours and services offered)
  • 18.9 per cent of respondents would prefer to increase user fees for current Town services (ex. Abbey Centre memberships/access, building permits, business licenses, etc.)
  • 4.6 per cent of the respondents would prefer to increase property taxes
