Alberta Crop Report for the week of Oct. 1, 2024

It was somewhat good news this past week as harvest advanced across the province, according to the Oct. 1 Alberta Crop Report, compiled by the Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) and Government of Alberta.

However, recent precipitation, while good for soil moisture levels, potential impacts on the quality of remaining cereal crop are a concern, the report notes.

Producers are hoping for drier conditions over the coming weeks in order to complete harvest.

Across regions, 85 per cent of major crops have been harvested, an 11 per cent jump from last week.

In Central Region, harvest is at 92 per cent, behind only the South Region at 93.5 per cent, and well ahead of the rest.

Assessment for Region Two: Central (Rimbey, Airdrie, Coronation, Oyen)

• Central Region harvest of major crops progressed 9 per cent over the last week to 92 per cent combined, which is ahead of the 5-year average of 71 per cent for this week.

• Specific major crop harvest progress per cent is 96 for spring wheat, 97 for barley, 93 for oats, 82 for canola, and 100 for dry peas.

• Lower rainfall this week in the region led to sub-surface moisture ratings of 40 per cent poor, 40 per cent fair, 15 per cent good, 4 per cent excellent, and 1 per cent excessive.

• Fall-seeded crop conditions are rated as 8 per cent poor, 24 per cent fair, 60 per cent good and 8 per cent excellent.
