Recap: RDP Athletic teams continue to gear up for 2024/25 season

This past weekend, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens soccer teams picked up wins in Olds; The RDP Cross Country Running team had another great showing; The RDP Rodeo team kicked off its season in Vermilion, earning several top 10 results.

RDP basketball, hockey and volleyball teams also participated in non-conference games as they continue to prepare for the 2024/2025 season.

Soccer

Red Deer Polytechnic Queens at Olds College – Saturday, September 21

The second place Queens Soccer team (4-1-0) downed the sixth seed Broncos (1-4-1) by a score of 3-1 at Olds College. Alisha Coules, Olivia Lundell and McKenna Leslie scored for the Queens. RDP goalkeeper Jana Leskewich (Bachelor of Education) made five saves.

The Queens have won four consecutive games.

RDP Kings at Olds College – Saturday, September 21

The third seed Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Soccer team (2-1-2) earned a 7-2 victory over the fourth place Olds College Broncos (0-2-3) on the road.

Kings captain Ajdin Sarcevic scored three times. Jaxon Fernandes, a second-year forward, contributed a pair of goals for the Polytechnic. Njegos Bajovic (Open Studies) and Ibukunoluwa Oyawale (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) added singles. Red Deer’s Brian Murray turned aside eight shots in the Kings’ net.

Cross Country Running

Grand Prix #3 – Lethbridge Polytechnic

The RDP Cross Country Running team had another impressive performance at Running Room Grand Prix #3 in Lethbridge.

The Queens finished first with 29 points. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings (47 points) placed third.

Once again, Melissa Ray (26:41) led the way for the Queens, placing fourth among ACAC female runners over 6 km. Teammate Justine Larson (27:00) finished sixth. Myah Cota (28:04), an RDP Bachelor of Science in Nursing student, ranked ninth.

The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks Women’s team (33 points) was second and the Medicine Hat College Rattlers (56 points) wrapped up third.

Jordan Coen (29:58), an RDP Bachelor of Kinesiology student, solidified third spot among his peers on the 8 km course. RDP’s Japhet Kipkosgei (30:49) ranked fifth among ACAC men. Owen House (33:14), a firstyear King, finished 17th.

The SAIT Trojans (18 points) led the ACAC men’s teams. The Kodiaks (39 points) finished second.

On September 28, the RDP Cross Country Running team will compete at Running Room Grand Prix #4 hosted by St. Mary’s University in Calgary. St. Mary’s University will also host the ACAC Cross Country Running Championships on October 26.

Rodeo

Vermilion Agricultural Society Rodeo – September 21 and 22

The RDP Rodeo team had a successful start to its 2024/2025 campaign, earning eight top 10 finishes at the Vermilion Agricultural Society Rodeo hosted by Lakeland College.

On the first day of competition, Casey Thomson (64 points) took top spot in Bareback Riding. Taylor Cholach (15.45) placed fourth in Barrel Racing and Julia Holtkamp (10.9) ranked eighth in Goat Tying.

Cholach continued her strong performances on the second day. She (15.14) improved to third in Barrel Racing and finished ninth in Breakaway Roping (18.8). Thomson (74 points) captured first in Bareback Riding on Sunday. Ryan Collett (22.9) placed second in Tie Down Roping. Chad Cooper (header) and Collett (heeler) solidified second (13.6) in Team Roping.

The Red Deer Polytechnic Rodeo and Dance teams officially joined the historic RDP Athletics program in August 2024. The RDP Rodeo team will compete this weekend in Dawson Creek, BC.
