Celebrating ‘DYEversity’ at Lindsay Thurber

Sep 18, 2024 | 2:22 PM

An event that brings together an entire student body in celebration of diversity will take place at Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School in Red Deer later this week.

The annual DYEversity Relay is set for Sept. 20, starting at 11 a.m. The event will begin in the school’s main gymnasium, followed by the relay in the school’s outdoor field.

“The event celebrates and promotes the diversity of the Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive School community,” said Principal Chris Good. “It’s more than just a fun activity. It’s a celebration of the many cultures, talents, and stories that make our school what it is. This event allows us to embrace and promote the incredible diversity within our community.”

School officials say the relay will kick off with an address from 2021 Lindsay Thurber alumni and Olympian Molly Simpson, who recently returned from the 2024 Paris Olympic Games where she placed fifth in Women’s BMX Racing.

Throughout the event, musical performances will take place including from Reed Salmon, a Lindsay Thurber alumni; Ashley Ghostkeeper, a local Metis-Cree Country Artist; and Emma Van Hyfte, Kolton McKay, and Kaitlin Shaw, Lindsay Thurber students. A marketplace, featuring a number of local organizations and agencies, will also be on site where students can learn about their missions.

School officials say the relay itself is symbolic of unity, noting students will take turns walking, running or wheeling around the track, while being doused in colourful powders at various intervals during the day. Each colour represents the vibrant tapestry of cultures that contribute to the rich diversity at Lindsay Thurber.

“The DYEversity Relay is something that students and staff look forward to,” said Good. “It’s a day where the whole school comes together as one community. The coloured powder is a fun reminder that we’re all unique, but when we come together, we create something strong and unified.”
