Rebels top Hurricanes in second pre-season bout

The Red Deer Rebels were seemingly much more focused on night two of their 2024 pre-season, winning 5-2 over the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

Coming off a 1-0 loss on Friday against the Hitmen, the Rebels were looking to bounce back, with just a short four-game pre-season schedule to get ready for the Sept. 21 regular season opener.

Scoring summary

Scoring began 7:29 into the first when the Rebels’ Beckett Hamilton (1st), who’s not yet 16-and-a-half, and was the Rebels 1st pick, 18th overall, in last year’s WHL Prospects Draft, notched one on the power play.

Then, at 15:32 of the opening frame, Leo Braillard (1st) equalized for the Canes, also on the man advantage.

But just 26 seconds later, Samuel Drancak (1st) restored the Rebels lead, which Red Deer took to the intermission.

Ahead 2-1 to start the second, Hamilton (2nd) scored his second of the night and again on the power play, this time at 5:50 of the period. And for the second time, both Carson Birnie and Jhett Larson assisted on Hamilton’s tally.

Chase Peterson (2nd) drew Lethbridge within one at 13:04 of the second, and it was 3-2 Red Deer after 40 minutes.

At 4:03 of the third, Drancak (2nd) made it 4-2 Red Deer with yet another power play marker, and Birnie picking up his third assist of the night.

Larson (1st) then got in on the power play scoring action at the 7:33 mark for a 5-2 lead.

The pre-season continues Sept. 13 at home to Medicine Hat, and wraps up Sept. 14 in Edmonton. Home game start times are 7 p.m. at the Centrium.

The regular season begins with two at home against Lethbridge and Medicine Hat Sept. 21 and 27.
