Alberta government aiming to preserve, promote, and protect province’s history

Alberta’s government says it is preserving the province’s history by investing $1.7 million in heritage conservation and awareness.

Government officials say every place tells a story, and through the Heritage Preservation Partnership Program, Alberta’s government is investing $1.7 million towards preserving historic places that celebrate Alberta’s heritage. Officials say the Heritage Preservation Partnership Program provides funds to projects that preserve Alberta’s unique history.

“Heritage conservation is an important part of maintaining Alberta’s unique character, helping us better understand and celebrate our provincial roots,” explains Tanya Fir, Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women. “These investments in our heritage will not only deepen our understanding of our shared identity, but help tell our stories for generations to come.”

In total, the government says 85 grants were distributed across the province to individuals and organizations that are working to preserve, promote and protect the province’s stories and heritage. Officials say the preservation of historical sites and culturally significant spaces helps celebrate where we came from, and helps instill a sense of pride for all the accomplishments Alberta has achieved.

The government says this year’s successful grant recipients come from across Alberta, including a grant for Edmonton Public Schools for the rehabilitation of the Strathcona Collegiate Institute (also known as the Old Scona High School), and a grant for the Arts and Heritage Foundation of St. Albert for the preservation of the 1906 Alberta Grain Company Grain Elevator.

“St. Albert’s two provincially designated grain elevators tell the province’s extensive agricultural history through public tours,” shares Ann Ramsden, executive director, Arts and Heritage Foundation of St. Albert. “There are considerable costs associated with restoring and preserving these historic landmarks and so we are extremely grateful for Government of Alberta grant funding. This allows us to continue working with our Provincial Heritage Advisor to preserve these buildings for future generations.”

“As a parent of two children attending Old Scona Academic, the Edmonton Public School holds a deeply unique and important role in education,” notes Mehroon Cassaday, Friends of Old Scona. “The building opened in 1908 and has been home to proud students, families and alumni of Old Scona Academic since 1976. On behalf of families and the community, we thank the Heritage Preservation Partnership Program for helping to maintain this historic building for future generations of students.”
