AHS shares summer health and safety tips

Jul 4, 2024 | 9:59 AM

Alberta Health Services (AHS) is encouraging Albertans to keep themselves and their loved ones safe as they enjoy summer with the following the safety tips in mind.

At the playground:

  • Always supervise young children. Actively watch your child and stay close enough to take action, if needed.
  • Take the Playground Safety Yes Test to see if young children are ready for safe play.
  • Remove necklaces or hooded sweatshirts as these can get caught in playground equipment.

When bicycling, skateboarding, inline skating, or other outdoor activities:

  • Wear a helmet and always check the helmet fits correctly.
  • Replace helmet after five years or after any crash when the person wearing the helmet has hit his/her head.
  • Never use a helmet with missing parts and ensure all straps, adjusters and fasteners are working correctly.
  • Wear the right helmet for the right activity. Driving motorized off-highway vehicles, such as ATVs, dirt bikes, quads and side-by-sides, need specific helmets.

When driving:

  • Make sure children are in the correct car seat or booster seat for their age and size.
  • Do not use handheld devices of any kind when you are behind the wheel.
  • Look out for pedestrians and cyclists and be patient as they cross or occupy the road.
  • Manage your speed. Follow speed limits and be patient especially in 30 km/h or 40 km/h zones.
