ENDED: Special Air Quality Statement issued across Alberta as wildfire smoke from B.C. rolls in

May 11, 2024 | 6:43 PM

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), wildfire smoke from northeastern B.C. is causing a widespread area to be impacted by very poor air quality and reduced visibility, including the Red Deer region.

Though some areas may see minor improvement Saturday evening, it is expected to worsen again Sunday.

Conditions will remain poor possibly through Tuesday.

“Wildfire smoke can be harmful to everyone’s health even at low concentrations. Everyone can take action to reduce their exposure to wildfire smoke,” ECCC says in its statement, which is in effect for the entire province.

“People with lung disease (such as asthma) or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people, and people who work outdoors are at higher risk of experiencing health effects caused by wildfire smoke. Speak with your health care provider about developing a management plan for wildfire smoke events and maintaining a supply of necessary medications at home and always carrying these medications with you during wildfire season.”

ECCC advises that people stop or reduce their activity level if breathing becomes uncomfortable.

In the meantime, you can check the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) for the latest readings.

As of dinner time Saturday, May 11, Red Deer is sitting at 10+, which indicates Very High Risk.

If you have an HVAC system in your home, use the highest rated MERV filter for your system (ideally rated 13 or higher) and set the fan to recirculate air constantly,” says ECCC. “You can also use a portable High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) air cleaner. Keep your doors and windows closed if the temperature in your home is comfortable.”

Be sure to check on people in your care and those around you who may be more susceptible to smoke, ECCC adds.

The special air quality statement, which is subject to change, can be read here.
