July 2020 Incident

Sentencing scheduled in Rimbey shooting incident

Mar 21, 2024 | 3:05 PM

Sentencing is scheduled this spring for a Lacombe County man charged in a Rimbey shooting incident nearly four years ago.

Jade John Edward Slofstra, 35, is scheduled for sentencing in Edmonton Court of King’s Bench on May 3, 2024. The date was set following the conclusion of his trial in Wetaskiwin Court of King’s Bench this week.

Slofstra was originally scheduled for trial in Rimbey provincial court on Apr. 21, 2021, then had it rescheduled to Dec. 15 of that year, before finally taking place this month.

Slofstra was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon contrary to an order, and breach of recognizance in the July 5, 2020 incident.

That’s when RCMP responded to a request for help from EMS after a female witness called 911 in relation to a shooting at a rural property in Rimbey.

Mounties say the shooting occurred after a brief altercation that had escalated between two males. Police say the victim was able to drive away from the location of the shooting but was later airlifted to hospital suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.

The male suspect turned himself into police the next day.

RCMP described the shooting as an isolated incident.
