'How Do We Know What to Believe?'

17th annual World Religions Conference returns to Red Deer to discuss truth and faith

Feb 28, 2024 | 12:30 PM

‘A lie can travel halfway around the world while truth is still putting on its shoes’. The author of this quote is debated, but with artificial intelligence, social media, and increasing global challenges, the meaning of truth is quickly becoming skepticized for some.

“Truth and Faith: How Do We Know What to Believe?” will be the topic of discussion at the 17th Annual World Religions Conference on March 6 from 6:30 – 9:30 p.m. at Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP).

Organized by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, they say that with rapidly advancing internet and communication technologies, rumors and misinformation are thriving, impeding access to truth. They state that those in search of truth are left to sift through mountains of information and noise. Without adequate tools for the search, verifying and validating information is increasingly difficult.

Malik Agyemang, co-organizer of the event, said determining how truth can be ascertained, and how it is linked to faith, would make an interesting piece of conversation.

Seven presenters from various faiths and philosophical backgrounds, including Aboriginal Spirituality, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, and the Humanist Perspective, will grapple with questions like:

  • Are philosophy and sciences the only pathways to a rational or justifiable understanding of reality and truth?
  • What role does religion play in our pursuit of knowledge and truth?
  • Can religion, philosophy, and science be allies for truth in this modern quagmire of misinformation and mistruths?

Agyemang says the annual conference is meant to remove barriers and misconceptions of the various backgrounds. He provided an example that following the 9/11 attacks in New York City, many people were misidentifying those of Sikh faith for those of Muslim faith, simply because they wore a headpiece, fueling misinformation and understanding.

“We want to give unity in diversity. We could be different in the way we approach things, in the way we worship, in the way we do things in our society; but in the end, we are one people and that is why it’s so important to get people from different backgrounds all at one place for us to talk about the same thing,” he said.

He says the goal of the conference is to give people the courage to speak with others who look and think differently, to ask questions, and most importantly, to learn.

“More often than not, we live in a Canada that is a multicultural society with people coming from various backgrounds. But sometimes, the nature of Canadians is to not offend anyone; so, with this conference, we bring people together and people, after the speakers, can ask questions, questions that maybe they would rather not ask on a different occasion,” he said.

Admissions is free but registration is recommended on Eventbrite.

Refreshments will be available, and guests are asked to donate a nonperishable food item for the RDP Student Association Food Bank.
