Red Deerians participate in Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday to stand against bullying

Feb 27, 2024 | 3:21 PM

Pink is the color of love and compassion. Tomorrow, Red Deerians will be joining people around the world to dress in the color for Pink Shirt Day as a statement against bullying.

The day began in 2007 when a student in Nova Scotia was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. Today, people wear the color to encourage others to be inclusive, welcoming, and supportive to their colleagues, classmates, clients, friends, and family.

Schools across Red Deer will be participating in the day on February 28.

The Red Deer Public Schools Division (RDPSD) says they will be focusing particularly on cyber bullying.

“In today’s digital world, it can be impossible to escape online bullying, whether it takes the shape of harassment, spreading rumours, sharing embarrassing information or threats,” RDPSD officials said in a release. They are encouraging students to be kind and lift others up.

The province says one of the best ways to prevent bullying and create safe environments is by building healthy relationships.

They say Albertans can get involved by sharing Pink Shirt Day resources on social media, practicing acts of kindness, discussing roles in bullying prevention, writing to the editor of their local news outlet about the importance of promoting healthy relationships, or hosting a Pink Shirt Day themed event in their community.

Other resources can be found on their website.
