Following back-to-back 3-1 losses to the Edmonton Oil Kings last week, the Red Deer Rebels responded this week with a dominating 7-3 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the Peavey Mart Centrium Family Day Monday.

It was the fourth meeting of the regular season between the two teams, with Lethbridge winning two of three coming into the game. A big crowd was also on hand to watch with 6,904 people in attendance.

And Lethbridge would strike first in this one, when Logan Wormald scored his 14th of the season at 4:12 to put the visitors up 1-0. Brayden Edwards and Joe Arntsen assisted on the play.

Then with the first period winding down, Red Deer’s Frantisek Formanek scored his 15th of the season at 19:12 with help from Samuel Drancak to make it 1-1 heading into the first intermission.

Red Deer outshot Lethbridge 12-5 after 20 minutes.

The Rebels then took a 2-1 lead at 4:43 of the second period when Kai Uchacz scored his 36th goal of the season, with Frantisek Formanek chipping in the assist.

Uchacz made it a two-goal lead when he scored his second of the game and 37th of the season at 5:38, thanks to assists from Kalan Lind and Talon Brigley on the power play. The goal quickly followed an interference penalty to the Hurricanes Landen Ward.

But Lethbridge came back with a goal of their own when Kooper Gizowski scored his 15th of the season at 7:15. Carter Dereniwsky earned the assist to make it 3-2.

The Rebels Frantisek Formanek then scored his second goal of the game and 16th of the season at 15:13 to make it 4-2, with Kai Uchacz and Jhett Larson adding the assists. It would later prove to be the game-winner.

Red Deer wasn’t done though, as Zane Saab would score his fourth of the season at 17:43, to pull away and make it a 5-2 game. Matthew Gard earned the assist.

The Rebels would also outshoot the Hurricanes in the second period, 17-8, and 29-13 overall to that point.

It was also at that point where Lethbridge would change goalies, taking out starter Harrison Meneghin, and replacing him with Brady Smith for the third period.

The final period saw Red Deer add further to their lead, however, when Ollie Josephson scored an unassisted shorthanded goal at 2:34, with Kai Uchacz sitting in the box for a delay of game penalty, making it 6-2.

The Hurricanes Kooper Gizowski responded soon afterwards though when he scored his second goal of the game and 16th of the season at 3:22 to close the Rebels lead to 6-3. Trae Wilke and Logan McCutcheon assisted on the powerplay goal with just seven seconds remaining in the Uchacz penalty.

Uchacz made up for it though by scoring his third of the game, for the hattrick, at 13:09 to make it 7-3 Red Deer. Hunter Mayo added in the helper.

The Rebels also outshot the Hurricanes 12-10 in the third period and 41-23 overall.

Each team would also score once on the power play with Lethbridge going 1/6, while Red Deer went 1/4 with the man advantage.

Three Stars:

1. Kai Uchacz – Red Deer. 3G, 1 A, (+/-) +2

2. Frantisek Formanek – Red Deer. 2G, 1A, (+/-) +4

3. Zane Saab – Red Deer. 1G, 0A, (+/-) +1

The win improves the Rebels record to 29-19-2-6 for 66 point and still second place in the WHL’s Central Division. Lethbridge drops to 24-25-5-0 for 53 points and fourth place in the Central Division.

The Rebels next game is Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024, 7:00 p.m. at the Peavey Mart Centrium when they host the 28-22-4-0 Wenatchee Wild.
