Rebels lose 4-1 to Wheat Kings in Brandon

The Red Deer Rebels 13-game point streak is now over following a 4-1 loss to the Wheat Kings in Brandon, MB, Friday night.

The Rebels were 2-1 against the Wheat Kings so far this season coming into the game, with their most recent meeting being a 5-3 victory at the Peavey Mart Centrium last Saturday.

The first period in this one was scoreless, however, with Red Deer outshooting Brandon 15-8 in the opening 20 minutes.

The flood gates opened in the second period though when Brett Hyland scored his 26th of the season, on the power play, at 2:15 of the middle frame, giving the Wheat Kings a 1-0 lead. Andrei Maliavin assisted on the goal following a cross checking penalty to the Rebels Matteo Fabrizi.

Then a charging penalty to Red Deer’s Ollie Josephson gave Brandon another power play, which they capitalized on. Brett Hyland struck again, scoring his second of the game and 27th of the season at 4:42, with Roger McQueen and Rylen Roersma earning the assists to make it 2-0 Wheat Kings.

But the Rebels would respond at 11:09 when Matteo Fabrizi scored his second of the season, thanks to assists from Jhett Larson and Frantisek Formanek to make it a 2-1 game.

However, Brandon quickly regained their two-goal lead when Roger McQueen scored his 20th of the season at 12:21. Nicholas Johnson and Brett Hyland chipped in with the helpers, making it 3-1.

Heading into the second intermission, Brandon would have a 3-1 lead and outshot Red Deer 11-7 in the second period. The Rebels were outshooting the Wheat Kings overall to that point though, 22-19.

The Rebels would press hard in the third period to tie it back up, but Brandon would seal the deal soon after Chase Wutzke was pulled from his net at 17:14. The Wheat Kings Matteo Michels took advantage and scored his 11th of the season, on the empty net, giving Brandon the 4-1 win.

Red Deer dominated the third period though, outshooting Brandon 18-2, but the Wheat Kings netminder, Carson Bjarnason, was solid between the pipes and helped his team hang on to victory.

The Rebels outshot Brandon 40-21 overall.

On special teams, Red Deer went 0/3 on the power play, while Brandon went 2/4 with the man advantage.
